Iodine is a very important trace element that is greatly essential for the body's normal growth and development. It plays a very essential role for making the thyroid glands healthy and for its normal functioning. The thyroid glands secrete the needed thyroid hormones of the body that controls the body’s basic metabolic rate.

Iodine also helps in the utilization of calories which prevents excess amounts of fats to be stored inside the body. This essential nutrient also helps in the proper utilization of calcium and silicon. It also helps remove harmful toxins from the body. Iodine is also important in the normal functioning of the brain. Not enough iodine in the body would result to a health disease called goiter.

Iodized salt is believed to be a good way for the body to get its much needed iodine. This results to more consumption of iodized salt by many people. However, over consumption of iodized salt is also not good as it may result to some health problems. One most common problem is high blood pressure. According to Mayo Clinic, excess iodized salt in the body also results to fluid build up or edema. These parts are most common in the legs and in some cases, in the eye area.

You might think you are filling-up your iodine deficiency by taking high amount of iodized salt or adding high amounts to your foods, however, always bear in mind that excess of iodized salt in the body also results to some health problems. It is always best to take anything in moderation.
