Colon Cancer and our Unhealthy Lifestyle

April 6th 2010 03:59
Colon cancer is a silent killer. It is a dangerous form of cancer as the person affected with it does not know he has the disease until it is in its later stage already. This kind of cancer takes years to develop, however once the symptoms start manifesting, it is most often too late already to treat. Colon cancer is another leading cause of many deaths all over the globe. It breaks families’ hearts seeing their loved ones suffer terminally. Can it be avoided? How does one acquire the disease?

The kind of lifestyle that we have greatly affects the development of colon cancer. We love eating delicious but fatty foods. Yes, who could resist that sizzling baby back ribs we just ate during lunchtime? How about a succulent serving of our favorite blueberry cheesecake? Oh, so mouth watering, so yummy! Special holidays would also bring the family members together and even our closest relatives. Who would not love the smell of our favorite barbeque in the backyard, with our favorite wine accompanied by our favorite family game? All these activities are part of our lives.

Yes, they are just so tasty and we love eating them. However, these foods that we enjoy most often are those that we have to eat in moderation or even not take at all. Barbequed foods for example, produce a kind of chemical that may be harmful to the body. Any food exposed to direct heat for a longer time produces chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HCAs). This chemical is one of the contributing factors of colon cancer. Also, when meat, chicken or fish is grilled, the fat that drips onto the source of the heat produces smoke that sticks to the foods. This smoke contains a harmful chemical called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which is carcinogenic.

The development of colon cancer in the body depends on the foods that we intake. Observing a high in fat and low in fiber diet may increase our chances of developing not only colon cancer but any kind of cancer. We can help our body lessen its chances of getting these diseases by increasing our “healthy foods” or “cancer-preventing foods” intake and decreasing our “unhealthy foods” intake. Healthy foods include high-fiber foods like vegetables and fruits, whole grains and legumes, also eating more on fish than meat and poultry products. Unhealthy foods obviously are those foods which are rich in fats like cakes, ice cream, poultry products and many more.

Your life depends on how you live it. Colon cancer takes years to develop and can be prevented if we start early. Watch what you eat. Always evaluate the kind of diet you have. Is it healthy or unhealthy? Do you want to live longer or lose that precious life of yours early? The choice is yours.
