Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy

August 19th 2010 15:46
Being pregnant is one of the happiest stages of a woman's life. This is great news most especially for couples who already want to start a family. This is an equally exciting news to family members who would love to welcome a new addition to the family.

However, pregnancy should not be taken lightly. A healthy diet is necessary in order to have a healthy baby. The right nutrients should be supplied even if your child is still in your womb. Improper eating may result to some pregnancy problems which may be life threatening both to the mother and her baby, one of which is gestational diabetes.

What is gestational diabetes? This kind of diabetes is developed during a woman’s pregnancy. This is the type of diabetes that even non-diabetic women can get. This is one of the most common problems of women during pregnancy which affects 2 to 3 percent of pregnant mothers. The risk of women getting this disease increases with age. It is therefore necessary that a pregnant mother should be careful with what she eats during her pregnancy most especially if she is older.

A gestational diabetes diet should include a diet which is low in carbohydrates and sweets. An expectant mother should watch what she eats in order to avoid health problems like this. Symptoms of a gestational diabetic mother includes increased thirst, fatigue, nausea and frequent urination, symptoms which when not taken into consideration are just mostly associated with pregnancy. It is therefore a must to have regular monthly check-ups in order to detect early pregnancy related problems.

Foods high in sugar should be avoided. Substitute single carbohydrates with the complex ones like cereals, potatoes, crackers, bread, peas, rice, grains, dried beans and pasta. Foods which are rich in saturated fats should be avoided also such as fatty meats, cream, cream cheese, whole milk cheese, bacon and butter. It is also necessary to eat foods rich in fiber such as fruits and vegetables.
